What you’ll make

Sew a colorful fabric tic-tac-toe game inspired by watermelon and pineapple, complete with a padded playing board, soft fruit pieces, and a coordinating storage bag.

The portable game is made for children and adults to enjoy together. It also puts small fabric scraps to good use.

What you’ll learn in this class

Layer fabric and batting for a soft game board.
Position and stitch bias tape to form the grid.
Turn the board, shape its corners, and close the opening.
Build fruit pieces with fusible web, batting, and stitched details.
Use straight, zigzag, or decorative stitching on the pieces.

Fabric and supplies

The sample uses tan canvas for the board. Muslin, cotonet, or another solid fabric can also provide a simple background that lets the fruit stand out.

Use colorful scraps for the fruit pieces, plus batting and double-sided fusible web. Bias tape forms the grid.

Make it your own

Change the fruit, colors, thread, or decorative stitches to create another theme. The pattern includes two lettering styles for the bag, or you can add your own lettering.

Use snaps, hook-and-loop tape, or a zipper for the bag closure. The bag follows the construction in the Memory Game tutorial.

Verified measurements

The board uses two fabric pieces and one batting layer measuring 25 x 25 cm. The storage bag uses two fabric pieces measuring 27 x 18 cm.
