What you’ll make
Sew the Tampa Shorts, a comfortable men’s Bermuda-style design with an elastic waistband, optional drawstring and back patch pocket.
A narrow stitched fold adds a vertical detail to each front. The waistband can be made from the main fabric or rib knit, depending on the fabric’s stretch.
Wear them with the Basic Men’s T-Shirt or Simon Mandarin-Collar Shirt.

What you’ll learn in this class
- Sew the decorative folded detail down both front pieces.
- Prepare, position and securely topstitch a back patch pocket.
- Assemble each leg and close the curved center seam.
- Stabilize and install eyelets for the optional drawstring.
- Attach the stretch waistband to the shorts.
- Thread and join the waistband elastic without twisting it.
- Finish the hems with straight, decorative or twin-needle stitching.
Fabric choices
A knit with some stretch is the main recommendation. The samples use denim-effect French terry and a lightweight terry fabric.
A woven fabric can also be used, but pair it with stretch rib knit for the waistband. When using the main fabric for the waistband, place its greatest stretch around the body.
Use a ballpoint, jersey or stretch needle for knit versions.
Make it your own
- Add one or two back pockets, or leave them off.
- Make the drawstring openings with eyelets or buttonholes.
- Omit the drawstring for a plain elastic waistband.
- Use the pocket fabric’s reverse side as a textural contrast.
- Adjust the leg length, hem depth or rise for the wearer.
Pattern sizing
The pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36 through 54/56. The chart spans waist measurements of 66–114 cm and hip measurements of 78–126 cm.
The pattern specifies 4 cm-wide waistband elastic, with cut lengths from 70–110 cm across the size range.
