What you’ll make
Sew the Derek men’s shorts, a comfortable pull-on style with an elastic waistband and discreet side-seam pockets.
The sample has turned-up hems in coordinating fabric, adding contrast to the otherwise clean design.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare the pieces for woven or knit fabric.
- Stabilize curves and finish fraying woven edges.
- Insert side-seam pockets neatly.
- Select suitable seams and edge finishes for your fabric.
- Make an elastic casing and insert the elastic without twisting it.
- Sew contrast cuffs or a simple hem.
Fabric options
The sample uses 100% cotton with a rustic finish. Linen and poplin are also suitable, while knit fabric gives the shorts a sportier feel.
Woven fabric may need overcasting or a zigzag finish. For knit fabric, the class explains stretch-stitch and overlock options.
Make it your own
Keep the contrast cuffs, use the main fabric for a simple hem, or add a front drawstring. See the kids’ swim shorts or Owen joggers for that detail.
For a coordinated outfit, pair the shorts with the basic men’s T-shirt.
Pattern sizing
The included pattern covers sizes 36 through 52.
The video demonstrates both woven and knit approaches, including the pockets, waistband, and optional contrast cuffs. A downloadable shorts pattern is included.
