What you’ll make
The Sun Shirt is a close-fitting children’s swim top designed to provide more coverage at the beach or pool.
It combines raglan sleeves with a high collar that covers the neck and nape. The pattern includes short- and long-sleeve options.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Identify the front, back, raglan sleeves and neckband.
- Use the notches to orient the raglan sleeves.
- Choose a ballpoint, jersey, stretch or super-stretch needle.
- Sew Lycra with stretch-compatible seams.
- Quarter and evenly stretch the neckband into place.
- Finish the hems with a twin needle or stretch stitch.
Fabric and machine setup
The design is intended for Lycra. Test the needle and stitch on a folded scrap of the same fabric before sewing the shirt.
Knit fabric can also make an everyday T-shirt. Compare the pattern with a well-fitting shirt first because the original design is close-fitting.
Make it your own
- Choose short or long sleeves.
- Narrow the neckband piece for a lower collar.
- Adjust the size for a looser everyday fit.
Pair it with the Kids’ Swim Shorts or Kids’ Bikini.
For younger children, add the Baby Diaper Cover.
Sizing
The included pattern covers sizes 9–12 months through 7/8 years.
