What you’ll make

Sew a baby diaper cover with gathered leg openings and an elastic waist. Wear it with a bodysuit or under a dress or circle skirt.

The pattern has separate front and back pieces, both cut on the fold. The cover can be made from woven or stretchy knit fabric.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut the front and back on the fabric fold.
  • Join the main seams and finish fraying woven edges.
  • Press and sew narrow leg casings.
  • Thread and join elastic without losing it inside the casing.
  • Make the wider waist casing.
  • Close each opening without catching the elastic.
  • Adjust the elastic for a comfortable fit.

Fabric and materials

Choose lightweight woven fabric for a crisp result or knit fabric for added stretch. The sample uses printed woven fabric, narrow leg elastic and wider waist elastic.

Finish the raw edges of fraying woven fabric with a zigzag stitch or serger. The knit option shown does not require the same edge finishing.

Make it your own

Coordinate prints with other outfits, add a size label or mark the back with a colored tab. A small decorative pocket is another option shown in the class.

Complete the set with reversible baby booties in matching fabric.

Fit and sizing

Select the required pattern size, then check the elastic against the baby whenever possible. Add length if the listed measurement would feel too snug.

The video class includes a downloadable diaper-cover pattern with size-based elastic guidance.
