What you’ll make
Sew a portable sleep mat with sleeves for a head pillow and two body cushions. A quilted blanket attaches to the base with snaps and can be removed for separate use.
A reinforced handle and long ties let you roll and carry the set. Snaps close the cushion openings so the inserts can be removed.
For another carrying option, make the weekend bag to hold the sleeping bag and other overnight essentials.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Convert cushion measurements into cutting dimensions.
- Combine fabrics while keeping directional prints correctly oriented.
- Sew pillow sleeves and divide the base into cushion compartments.
- Reinforce the handle and secure the roll-up ties inside a seam.
- Layer fabric and batting, turn the blanket, and quilt through the layers.
- Add snaps to the cushion openings and attach the removable blanket.
- Roll the finished mat and secure it with the ties.
Fabric and structure
Use woven fabric for the pillow base and blanket, batting inside the detachable quilt, twill tape or webbing for the handle and ties, and snaps for the closures.
A walking foot helps feed the fabric and batting evenly while quilting.
Make it your own
Plan the mat around cushions you already own. Add another body cushion for a longer version, change the head-pillow shape, or use one fabric throughout.
Use the blanket separately, make only the cushion mat or quilt, or add more snaps if you want the blanket secured at additional points.
Planning the size
The PDF example uses one 34 × 52 cm head cushion and two 52 × 52 cm body cushions. Its worksheet converts your cushions’ height and width into cutting dimensions.
Fabric and batting needs vary with the chosen cushions, number of sections, and fabric combination.
The video class includes a downloadable worksheet for planning a custom-size sleeping bag.
