What you’ll make
Sew a lightweight backpack that folds into its own pocket for compact storage, then opens into an extra bag for travel, errands, or day trips.
The backpack has a zippered opening, adjustable shoulder straps, and a small loop for hanging the packed bag.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Construct turned fabric shoulder straps.
- Combine woven and stretch fabric in the folding pocket.
- Install and reinforce the curved main zipper.
- Align the shaped panels using pattern notches.
- Secure the pocket and straps before assembly.
- Add buckles to make the straps adjustable.
Fabric options
Use poplin for a stable, beginner-friendly version or thin waterproof fabric for a lightweight bag. The waterproof sample is not made from oilcloth.
The pocket includes a stretch section, such as rib knit, to make folding the backpack into itself easier.
Make it your own
For poplin, the PDF directs you to cut the pocket pieces 1 cm larger in both dimensions. Canvas is possible, but its added bulk requires a larger folding pocket.
