What you’ll make
Sew a roomy, knee-length quilted vest designed to layer over a sweater or sweatshirt. It has a lined body, two front patch pockets with flaps and a two-way front zipper.
A lined hood attaches with snaps, so it can be added or removed as needed. Snaps can also close the hood at the front and secure the pocket flaps.
The generous cut provides room for movement and thicker garments underneath.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Control quilted outer fabric and a shifting lining.
- Assemble and line a detachable paneled hood.
- Sew patch pockets and finished pocket flaps.
- Install and align a two-way separating zipper.
- Join the outer vest and lining.
- Finish lined armholes with an enclosed method.
- Position snaps for the hood and pocket flaps.
Fabric and handling
The project uses quilted fabric for the exterior and a separate lining. Both can shift during construction, while the quilted layer changes length when compressed.
The class uses temporary stitching and reference marks to align the zipper, lining, hem and armholes. A walking, roller or zipper foot can help at different stages.
Make it your own
Make the vest with or without the hood and pockets. The lesson also presents alternate armhole finishes if the fully enclosed method is unsuitable for your fabric or experience.
Topstitching around the neck, zipper, armholes and hem is optional. Consider how securely the lining sits and whether needle marks remain in the quilted surface.
