What you’ll make

The Motril is a versatile kids’ pants pattern with an elastic waist and diagonal front pockets. The fullest version adds a drawstring, pleated patch pockets with flaps and elasticated ankles.

Leave off the patch pockets and ankle elastic for comfortable straight-leg pants. The same pattern can create a sporty style or a simpler everyday pair.

Pair them with the Mark Tank Top, Lexie Tank Top or the top version of the Carina Sweatshirt Dress.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Stabilize curved and diagonal edges.
  • Sew and topstitch the diagonal front pockets.
  • Form the pleats on the optional patch pockets.
  • Prepare and attach the pocket flaps.
  • Join the legs and align the crotch seams.
  • Construct the waistband and drawstring openings.
  • Insert elastic at the waist and ankles.

Fabric choices

The pattern works with woven or knit fabric. Denim and French terry suit a sportier version, while viscose creates a softer, more fluid pair.

Corduroy is another suggested option for cooler weather. The class explains how stabilization and edge finishing vary with stretchy, fluid or fraying fabrics.

Make it your own

Add both pleated patch pockets, use only one or omit them. You can also adjust their marked position before stitching if a different height suits the child better.

Choose elasticated ankles for a gathered finish or use a regular hem for a straight leg. Shorten the legs for a warm-weather version.

The elastic waistband works with or without a drawstring. The class demonstrates stitched drawstring openings and shows how to reinforce them.

Kids’ sizing

The pattern covers sizes 4/5 through 14/15, corresponding to listed heights from 110 to 164 cm.

The body chart lists waist measurements of 54–71 cm and hip measurements of 61–86 cm. Waistband elastic lengths are provided separately in the pattern information.

The class is accompanied by downloadable A4 and A0 pattern files and an information sheet with size and elastic charts.
