What you’ll make
Sew the Carina, a comfortable sweatshirt dress for kids with a crew neck, concealed side pockets, shaped sleeves, wide cuffs, and a lower band.
It is an approachable first clothing project that introduces useful techniques for sweatshirts and other casual knit garments.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Read fold markings and notches before cutting the pieces.
- Join the shoulders and attach the sleeves while the body is open.
- Apply a smaller rib-knit neckband evenly.
- Create concealed side pockets with the class’s alternative method.
- Shape the wide sleeves before attaching the stretch cuffs.
- Add the lower band in two sections.
Fabric choices
Use brushed sweatshirt fabric for a warmer dress or French terry for a lighter version. The neck and cuffs need rib knit or another fabric with enough stretch for fitted bands.
The lower band may be cut from rib knit or from the main fabric when it has suitable stretch.
Make it your own
Use the design as a starting point for a sleeveless summer dress, a shorter T-shirt version, or a rib-knit variation.
Pair it with the leggings for women, kids, and babies.
