What you’ll make

Sew the George, a button-front school smock for children or women. Its asymmetric overlap places the closure slightly to one side rather than at the center.

The design has long sleeves with rib-knit cuffs and a roomy patch pocket, making it suitable for children or teachers.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Interface the asymmetric front closure.
  • Attach facings for a clean neckline and front edge.
  • Set the sleeves and finish the side seams.
  • Stretch rib knit evenly while attaching cuffs.
  • Sew and open buttonholes, then position buttons.
  • Prepare and securely topstitch a patch pocket.

Fabric and materials

The sample is sewn in cotton with rib knit at the wrists. You will also need fusible interfacing for the overlapping front and buttons for the closure.

Seams can be finished with an overlocker, zigzag or overlock-style machine stitch, so an overlocker is optional.

Make it your own

Use the separate pocket templates or alter the pocket’s shape and size. Add one large pocket, place a smaller one at the chest or personalize it with a sewn or embroidered name.

Choose a coordinating or darker rib knit for the cuffs. If you omit the cuffs, lengthen the sleeve pattern to replace the missing cuff length.

For another style, see the elastic-neck smock or teacher’s smock apron.

Pattern sizes

The children’s pattern covers ages 3/4 through 9/10. The women’s pattern covers sizes 36/38 through 48/50.

Children’s and women’s patterns are supplied in A4 home-print and A0 copy-shop formats, with a separate pocket-pattern file.
