What you’ll make

Sew the Columbia, a slim single-compartment case for pens, pencils, glasses, or other small items. Closure tabs fold across the opening and fasten with snaps.

The class covers a turned, interfaced method for fabric that frays and a raw-edge method for sturdy materials that do not fray.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Select the right construction method for your material.
  • Interface, sew, turn, and press woven pieces.
  • Layer and secure non-fraying materials.
  • Topstitch narrow curves evenly.
  • Position and reinforce the closure tabs.
  • Handle bulky layers and install snaps.

Fabric and materials

For the turned version, use poplin or another fraying woven. The class adds medium-weight interfacing to one main layer and lighter interfacing to the closure tabs.

For the raw-edge version, choose a sturdy non-fraying material such as faux leather, felt, or softshell. Canvas should use the method appropriate to whether it frays.

Test the full thickness before sewing. A walking, roller, or Teflon foot may help the layers feed evenly.

Make it your own

Use the case for stationery or adapt the base pattern to fit a pair of glasses. Choose plastic or metal snaps to suit the material.

Other case designs include:

The class includes the printable Columbia pattern and demonstrations of both material-specific construction methods.
