What you’ll make
Create a portable chalkboard book with reusable drawing pages, a printed fabric cover, carrying handles and a clear zippered pocket for chalk or wipes.
The main panels measure 30 × 21 cm. Rounded corners and colorful bias binding finish the pages, while stitching through the center forms the spine.
A small chalkboard-fabric patch on the cover can hold a name for a personalized finish.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Round chalkboard-fabric panels consistently.
- Add a name patch with decorative zigzag stitching.
- Sew a zipper to clear plastic and improve how it feeds.
- Build a clear zippered pocket into the cover.
- Bind thick curved pages with bias tape.
- Center the handles and stitch the pages into a spine.
Fabric and supplies
The project combines chalkboard fabric, an exterior print, clear plastic, a zipper, bias tape, handles and snaps.
Chalkboard fabric is thicker than ordinary cloth but remains flexible. Use clips instead of pins to avoid holes, and check that your machine can sew through the planned layers.
Make it your own
Vary the book’s size and page count if your machine can handle the thickness. Use different binding colors, or make the handles from bias tape, ribbon or cord.
Place the clear pocket toward the front or back, add a snap to keep it closed, and choose the shape and position of the name patch.
