What you’ll make
The Calella is a roomy, cropped sweatshirt or knit top with long sleeves, cuffs and a neckband. The lower edge is hemmed rather than finished with a waistband.
Fabric choice can shift the look from a cozy sweatshirt to a lighter top. For related projects, see the Austin and Boston tutorials.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Choose an appropriate needle, stitch and feeding method for knits.
- Align the shoulders and symmetrical sleeves with the pattern notches.
- Sew knit seams with a serger or standard sewing machine.
- Close each sleeve and side seam cleanly.
- Finish the lower edge with a twin-needle hem.
- Attach the cuffs while distributing their stretch evenly.
- Quarter and attach the neckband for balanced stretch.
Choosing your knit
Use sweatshirt fabric or French terry for a cozier version. A lighter rib knit creates a softer top with more of a sweater or T-shirt feel.
A ballpoint or stretch needle is recommended. A walking or roller foot can help when the fabric is thick or difficult to feed.
Make it your own
- Lengthen the body beyond the cropped cut.
- Add a waistband instead of hemming the lower edge.
- Add a pocket, appliqué or other surface detail.
- Add eyelets or buttonholes and a cord or ribbon at the hem.
- Topstitch the neckband with a twin needle, zigzag or another stretch stitch.

The pattern includes sizes 34/36, 38/40, 42/44, 46/48, 50/52 and 54/56.

- Waist: 64–110 cm across the size range.
- Hip: 90–136 cm across the size range.
