What you’ll make

Sew the Boston, a pullover that can look like a sweater, sweatshirt, or lightweight top depending on the knit you choose.

Its defining details are an inverted triangular front insert, a back yoke, gently gathered sleeve caps, a neckband, and wide elasticized cuffs.

What you’ll learn in this class

Join the back yoke.
Gather the sleeve caps evenly between the pattern marks.
Set the front insert with a clean triangular point.
Sew knit seams with a regular machine or serger.
Distribute the neckband evenly.
Create elasticized cuffs and finish the lower hem.

Fabric options

French terry and sweater knits create sweatshirt or sweater versions. Lightweight jersey can produce a lighter top.

Use a stretch, jersey, or super-stretch needle suited to the fabric. A walking or roller foot can help control thick or very stretchy knits around the insert.

Make it your own

Use wide or narrow elastic at the cuffs, add separate cuff bands, or simply hem the sleeves. The lower edge can also be hemmed or gathered with elastic.

Try short sleeves for a lighter version, or add ruffles at the triangular front detail.

Pattern sizing

The pattern runs from 34/36 through 54/56. Its chart covers busts of 86–132 cm, waists of 64–110 cm, and hips of 90–136 cm.

Finished length ranges from 66 to 71 cm by size. Home-print A4 and copy-shop A0 files are included.
