What you’ll make
Sew a lined bucket hat for babies, children or adults. Its crown and stitched brim create a practical shape that can be adapted for different seasons.
The pattern runs from 6 months through adult L. With an invisible hand-stitched finish at the lining opening, the hat can also be reversible.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Stabilize curved edges before assembly.
- Match the crown, side and brim pieces.
- Control directional prints across the panels.
- Join the outer hat and lining at the brim.
- Clip curved seams for a smoother finish.
- Topstitch concentric lines around the brim.
Choose fabric for the season
For warm weather, pair a canvas outer with a poplin lining. Poplin can also be used outside for a lighter result, with interfacing added for more body.
Waterproof fabric suits rainy days. Corduroy, quilted fabric or a warm fleece-like fabric can adapt the same pattern for cold weather.
Make it your own
Make the hat reversible by closing the lining opening with an invisible hand stitch. You can also vary the spacing of the brim’s concentric topstitching.
