What you’ll make

Sew a small lined flap bag with a structured body, curved lower corners, fringe and a braided-cord strap. A faux-leather closure finishes the front.

The demonstrated bag has a summer boho look, but fabric, trim and strap choices can give the pattern a different style.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Fuse and handle Decovil for a structured bag.
  • Ease a side-and-base panel around curved pieces.
  • Clip curved seam allowances for a smooth shape.
  • Position fringe along the lower edge.
  • Position and sew the faux-leather closure.
  • Join the outer bag, lining, flap and strap loops.

Fabric and supplies

Choose coordinating exterior and lining fabrics. Decovil or firm medium-weight interfacing shapes the bag, while fringe, braided cord, rings and a flap closure complete the demonstrated version.

Make it your own

  • Change the print and trim to suit your style.
  • Adjust the braided-cord strap length.
  • Piece the side panel when using smaller remnants.

For a larger bag made with a different structural material, see the Florence maxi bag tutorial.

The bag-making video is accompanied by a downloadable pattern.
