What you’ll make

Sew the Anna Smock, an apron-style layer with full front and back coverage. It slips over the head, with buttoned shoulder straps and ties at the sides.

A back yoke and inverted pleat allow room to move. Roomy front pockets can be left open or secured with zippers.

Compare it with the Unisex Smock and George Smock.

Another option is the Zip-Front Smock.

What you’ll learn in this class

Prepare and reinforce an open patch pocket.
Add a zipper to a front pocket.
Form the inverted pleat below the back yoke.
Sew and turn shoulder straps and side ties.
Stabilize the buttonhole area with interfacing.
Finish the facings, corners, edges, and hem.

Fabric guidance

The sample uses poplin, a lightweight woven cotton. You will also need interfacing and optional zippers for secured pockets.

The sample poplin frays easily, so the class demonstrates finishing the raw edges before assembly.

Make it your own

Choose open pockets, zippered pockets, or one of each. You can enlarge them or add a divided chest pocket for pens and pencils.

Add as many side ties as you need and position them to suit you. The class also suggests buttons and buttonholes or hook-and-loop tape as alternative side fastenings.

Additional button positions on the shoulder straps can provide more room over thicker clothing.

Pattern sizing

The pattern covers sizes 34/36 through 54/56. The chart spans a chest of 86–132 cm, waist of 64–110 cm, and hips of 90–136 cm.

Finished smock lengths range from 88.5 cm in size 34/36 to 96 cm in size 54/56.
