Creativity is one of the most powerful forces we have, and it lives in all of us. It allows us to see opportunities where others see problems, imagine things that didn’t exist before, overcome obstacles, and adapt to circumstances in unique ways. Creativity lets us step outside the norm and use a sewing notebook in many different ways.
Today, on Book Day, we want to encourage you to create your own. Because writing may not be your thing, but if you’re here, it’s because sewing is one of your passions. And to write a book worth reading, you don’t necessarily have to invent a novel.
Take a look at these three alternative ways to use a sewing notebook: some will be very positive for you, while others will be a genuine gift to the people you love. Let’s discover them!
3 alternative ways to use a sewing notebook
1. As a learning plan to make a commitment to yourself
The “logical” way to use a sewing notebook is to write down the projects as you work on them, right?
However, you can use it as a roadmap: a way to commit yourself to what you want to do or learn. Write down the names of the projects you want to learn to make this year before you make them. That way, you’ll have your step-by-step guide, your learning plan.
And when you open it, you’ll know exactly where to pick up and which project comes next. Just leave a few blank pages for improvising ;)
2. Become a teacher: pour your wisdom into it and give it to someone who needs it
We all have something to teach and the ability to teach it. In this case, we invite you to “commit” a wonderful act of generosity with someone you care about who is taking their first steps in sewing.
Imagine if someone had given you, when you were starting out, a notebook filled with wisdom and secrets. Imagine how valuable it would have been to you in so many different ways.
It doesn’t have to be Book Day for you to create such a special gift. They say that when you give something to another person, you’re giving it to yourself too. And we love that idea.
3. As a journal: connect meaningful moments in your life to your sewing projects
This isn’t about turning the notebook into a diary. You could simply buy a diary for that. But knowing the healing power of sewing, combined with the power of writing to freeze time, we can create something really beautiful.
It may seem like a strange idea, and it is. But what you’ll end up with is a very special notebook.
While you’re sewing, your mind works in a different way: the concentration, the meditation, the way your thoughts flow… it’s special, isn’t it? Different ideas come to you in these moments, sometimes very clear or revealing ones, which we later forget.
Our suggestion is that you don’t limit yourself to writing down the materials and the step-by-step instructions for the sewing project you’re working on, but also the ideas that come to you while you’re making THAT particular project.
