It’s midsummer, and every week we’re still looking for refreshing, original ideas to fill your summer wardrobe with unique pieces. Today it’s bikinis’ turn—they’ve been the absolute stars of this scorching July. As usual, we’ve scoured the web for the easiest and prettiest DIY ideas for customizing bikinis: it’s time to bring the most basic, boring bikinis to life. I’m sure you’ll find a suggestion among these that works for that bikini you’ve abandoned in a drawer because you’re not completely convinced by it. You can also get a simple one without too many details and be the one to give it that special touch that will undoubtedly turn it into your favorite.
With ribbons and buttons.
Small details are what make the biggest difference. With just a little ribbon that contrasts with the color of your bikini and a few pretty buttons, you can turn a very basic, slightly dull bikini into an absolute delight, as you can see in the example in the photograph. It’s a nautical style without too much sparkle that changes its appearance completely and draws attention with minimal customization. It’s important to choose contrasting colors carefully, or this subtle technique won’t have the desired effect. You can also choose other strategic places to add the bows, such as the point where the straps meet the cups.
With fringe.
Fringe never goes out of style, and even if it does for a season, it always comes back. This wonderfully simple idea will completely change the style of your bikini, and it will also help you recycle fabrics or garments you no longer use. Using the triangle of your bikini as a guide, cut a triangle with the same dimensions at the top, but larger at the bottom so the fringe sticks out a little (if you want it to). Once you have the two fabric triangles, cut them into strips of roughly the thickness you prefer to create the fringe. Sew the fringed triangle along the neckline (keep in mind which side you’re going to sew it on before cutting), and you have the top. If you want to do the same with the bottom, cut a rectangular piece of fabric to the measurement of the bikini’s waistband and add fringe to it as well. Keep in mind that, depending on the fabric you use, it will take more or less time to dry, in case you’re planning to go swimming in the sea.
With fabric braids, t-shirt yarn, or pom-pom trim.
Another very simple way to customize bikinis is to make fabric or t-shirt yarn braids and, just as we did with the fringe pieces, sew them onto strategic parts of the bikini. You can sew them along the neckline and even make them longer so they can serve as a cord for tying the bikini around your neck: it will hardly take any extra work, and it will look lovely this way. In fact, you can sew the braid onto just one side of the triangle, two sides, or all three—whatever you like best! As for the bottoms, you can sew it only around the waistband, since adding it around the leg openings as well may cause chafing or bother you when you move.
