Today we're bringing you a different kind of post, designed with both you and the little ones at home in mind. After showing you the best of Nordic design and how to wrap gifts Japanese-style, this week we've decided to travel much farther, to asteroid B 612. From there, we're bringing you some beautiful fabrics capable of holding stories.
That asteroid was home to a child who knew more than any adult about the important things. Just like him, we want to maintain a curious and creative attitude toward life: the ability to see an elephant inside a snake, a sheep inside a box, and a unique piece of handmade craft in a scrap of fabric or a skein of yarn.
The power of imagination remains one of the most wonderful things we possess, and we must put it into practice every day, just as our children do.
The Little Prince came from the stars looking for a friend and found a rather unusual one who told him:
“Only the things that are tamed are truly known. People no longer have time to get to know anything. They buy everything ready-made in stores. And since there are no stores that sell friends, people no longer have friends. If you want a friend, tame me!”
In the same way, when we “tame” a scrap of fabric or a skein of yarn, we establish an emotional bond with our creations, refuse to keep buying everything ready-made, and reclaim the pleasure of getting to know things.
That is where much of the magic of crafting lies. We recover the knowledge of how things are made, and manage to make what we create truly unique in a world full of identical things, just as the fox was. He was the one who taught the Little Prince that lesson Antoine de Saint-Exupéry passed on to humanity:
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
