Every time we discover a new material for making original and fun projects, we feel as if the Three Kings had arrived. A few weeks ago we started sewing clear plastic and experimenting with it, and we're very happy with the result. It's very easy to handle and incorporate into designs, and it doesn't require too many special precautions (although there are a couple of things we'll need to be careful about).
What do you think of the idea? Are you lacking inspiration for creating new and different things? Do you feel like trying to sew clear plastic? Then take note of the projects we've been making with it and give it a try. It has tons of possibilities, and trying new materials always stimulates our imagination so much.
Obviously, we don't mean just any kind of plastic (don't make a mess!): it's a special plastic for sewing—durable and flexible, which you can find in our online store (if it's out of stock, you can send us an email so we can let you know when it's available).
Precautions for sewing clear plasticYou don't need a special needle to sew clear plastic. You only need to keep a couple of details in mind:
- Use a Teflon foot—it's ideal for sewing plastic. If you don't have one, you could put a little washi tape or painter's tape under the universal presser foot so it slides better. Another option is to try the walking foot.
- Be careful, because you won't be able to unpick it. Well, technically you can, of course, but the plastic will end up full of little holes, so it's best to go slowly and avoid mistakes. In the worst case, you could trim away the part of the plastic that was perforated and try to adjust the size, if the project you're making allows it.

If you want to see us working with it so you can see how it's done, we've already used it in the tutorial for this fabric backpack that you can watch if you're signed up for Lulu Ferris. You already know that we upload a new tutorial every week, and whenever there's a new material in the store, we try to include it.
Another lovely thing we've made with it is this toiletry bag. It turned out beautifully! The best part is that you can see everything inside, so it's perfect for avoiding half an hour of rummaging around for your eyeliner. It's also very practical for backpacks, pencil cases, and even purses, if you have nothing to hide ;)

Give sewing clear plastic a try in your designs to get results as beautiful as these! Look for it in the store to see whether it's available, or send us an email so we can let you know when it's back in stock.
Let your imagination run wild!
