I’m sure you’ve already heard of this famous movement. What is Movember? How and why did it begin? What is its goal? Today we’re going to tell you a little about its history and give you some Movember ideas so you can join the mustache movement in your own way.
The idea began in 2003 in Australia, when Travis and Luke met at a Melbourne pub like any pair of friends. But that day, an idea was born whose impact they couldn’t even begin to imagine, with the goal of supporting another friend who had prostate cancer. The idea was to grow an eye-catching mustache and, when people asked them about it, use the opportunity to spread awareness of this disease and others, such as testicular cancer.
They convinced 28 others to join them, and those men, now known as the Original 30, launched this original plan with unexpected success. That’s how the Movember Foundation was born in 2004, with the aim of bringing together everyone interested in the movement and raising funds to support causes related to men’s health.
From then on and through 2014, the movement reached an international scale, bringing together nearly 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, the names used for the men and women who join the cause. Over the years, the foundation has raised around €485 million! and 832 projects supporting men’s health have been created in the 21 countries that already participate, including Spain.
Everything points to the numbers continuing to grow unstoppable during Movember 2015. Are you joining us?
MOVEMBER IDEAS: MUSTACHES EVERYWHERE!
There are different ways to support Movember, and any of them is worthwhile. You can contribute financially, either by donating to the foundation or raising money for it. You can also do your bit by helping spread the word, which is the purpose behind the original idea.

Mo Bros have to maintain and care for an eye-catching mustache throughout the month, attracting the attention of friends and family. Mo Sistas can create their own mustaches and wear them proudly. Here are some Movember ideas for making your own.
One of the most common versions is what we might call the mustache on a stick. It couldn’t be easier! Just cut out the mustache design you like best and attach one end to a stick like the ones sold for making kebab skewers. You can make it from cardstock or felt, for example, and use one of the many templates you’ll find online if drawing isn’t your strong suit.

Another idea we love is drawing little mustaches everywhere with a permanent marker in hand. In our previous post about painting umbrellas (how about a mustache umbrella?), we told you about Sharpies, which are widely used in the crafts and DIY world. With them and some mugs, you can create true marvels like these we found at P. S. Heart. What would you paint?
Another great way to wear a mustache is on your clothes. Last year, in honor of Movember, we filmed a tutorial for making mustache-shaped appliqués. For this, you’ll need some Heat and Bond and some beautiful fabrics from our store.
You can also use fabric paint or permanent fabric markers. Fortunately, making a mustache-shaped template is very easy, so you don’t need to be especially good at drawing.
Actually, anything goes: mustaches with a hole fitted onto a drinking straw, mustache pacifiers that will make you smile nonstop when you look at the little ones at home, nail art, crocheted mustaches, mustaches on your shoes or rings… The only thing that matters for these Movember ideas to work is that they’re clearly visible and attract attention, so you’ll have an opening to talk about this wonderful initiative.
