So today we’re going to tell you a little about this new material so you can try it too. What it is, how to use it, what its characteristics are… Will you stay and discover it with us?
What is foam stabilizer for sewing?
So that you can imagine it without having to see or touch it, it’s like a soft, cushy foam sheet that you can use as “padding” in some projects.
The one you can find in the shop is fusible on both sides, although it includes a piece of natural-colored muslin. If you want to work with the stabilizer without it sticking, you only need to press this muslin onto it.
Since it’s a thick material, it adds a certain degree of complexity to sewing projects, but don’t be afraid to use it and experiment with it.
What is the stabilizer used for?
Mainly, the stabilizer gives us two things: structure and cushioning.
We already carry other stabilizers in the shop, such as Decovil, a semi-rigid interfacing that’s also fusible and allowed us to give projects more body. With Decovil, we made baskets, toiletry bags, handbags, and all kinds of things, with very good results.
However, we were missing that cushioning that we do get with foam stabilizer for sewing. As you can see in the photographs, it’s soft and thick enough to use for protection.
That’s why our first idea when we got our hands on it was, precisely, a laptop case.
Can I wash and iron projects made with the stabilizer?
Of course! Otherwise, we’d have a problem. To put it in the washing machine, we recommend washing in cold water: at 0º if the outer fabric allows it.
As for ironing, choose a low temperature.
