Last week, we celebrated the arrival of chalkboard fabric in our lives with a post full of creative ideas for using it. Given the wonderful reception it received, this week we’d like to do the same with the order that has just arrived at our store.
This time, it isn’t about a curious new development in the textile world, but rather a classic with almost limitless possibilities: burlap fabric! We’re back with a post full of DIY ideas to show you how a fabric that appears so modest can produce genuine wonders.
Let’s get to work!
1. BANNERS.
One of Lulu Ferris’s star products: we love banners! We have them in every shape, size, and color, with painted or sewn letters, embroidered or simple; we never get tired of trying new designs. You can make them yourself by buying the burlap fabric from our craft store, or ask us to make them to your liking: take a look at all the designs we have to choose from in the handmade products section!
2. BASKETS.
Using burlap and any other fabric you choose to add a personal touch, you can make baskets in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Whether you use them to organize your closets and drawers, for the kids to store their toys, or to store your makeup… They’re useful for everything, and you can personalize them to your liking! Our YouTube tutorial is sure to help.
3. CANDLE HOLDERS.
By recycling glass jars covered with burlap fabric, you can make original candle holders for very little money. You just need to remove the jar’s label carefully and glue on the piece of burlap, decorated or undecorated, with a little craft glue. Try making different designs.
4. PERSONALIZED CONTAINERS FOR YOUR PENCILS, KITCHEN UTENSILS, ETC.
Using the same technique we explained for the candle holder or making a burlap cover, you can recycle not only glass jars, which were the appropriate material for withstanding heat, but also plastic tubes, cardboard, etc. You can draw a design on the burlap or embroider some kind of decoration, such as the flowers we show you below.
5. PLANTERS, PLANTER COVERS, AND BOUQUET HOLDERS.
Because it’s a very porous and inexpensive fabric, we’ve seen many people use burlap sacks directly as planters to place in the garden, even allowing the soil inside to absorb moisture from the ground. If you want to keep your plants inside the house, you can also create covers or cover your planters with burlap. Another idea we found especially original is these bouquet holders designed to hang in any corner of the house.
6. SCENTED SACHETS.
Use burlap together with aromatic plants (potpourri) to create sachets to leave in your closet, purse, car, or anywhere else you’d like to scent with a special fragrance. Create small sachets like the ones in the photograph and decorate them to your liking. Once the scent becomes less intense, you’ll only need to change the filling.
7. BURLAP FLOWERS.
There are various techniques you can use to make different flowers. You can use these flowers as a decorative element by sewing them onto your creations; attach a safety pin so you can move them between your clothes and accessories as brooches; or gather several together to create a bouquet for a table centerpiece… That depends on your imagination.
8. COIN PURSES.
One of the things you can do with the flowers is, for example, use them as decoration on a coin purse also made with burlap. But that’s not the only way you can personalize your coin purse: paint the fabric before working with it, embroider an appliqué, decorate it with a snap… You’re the one who makes it unique.
9. FLATWARE SLEEVES.
Amazingly easy to make and yet, they give your table a different and very special touch. You can also add all kinds of details to make them unique. Look at the photograph: with just a little piece of string and a cardstock tag, we can give them a high degree of personalization.
10. BRACELETS.
Yes, you read that correctly. Although we usually think of burlap as a rough material, unsuitable for certain sophisticated projects, crafting lets us turn any scrap of fabric into something wonderful, including this one. By choosing the right decorations to give it the touch we want, we can achieve a result as elegant as the one you see in the photograph.
11. ALL KINDS OF ORGANIZERS.
With a minimal investment, you can create all kinds of organizers to hang on the wall or inside the closet. Depending on your needs, you can create more or fewer pockets in different sizes to store anything you can think of, such as your sewing supplies, your various hairbrushes, or even your shoes!
12. DECORATIVE BOARDS.
We love this idea for decorating any room in the house. Create several pieces featuring different letters and combine them to form names or words; use burlap as a background to display photographs or drawings; paint words or different messages on it… Once again, we give you the idea, but you’re the one who brings it to life your own way.
