Have you heard of baby muslin cloths? Do you know what they are or what they’re used for? Today’s post is devoted to these wonderful pieces of fabric, which are useful for all kinds of things and have finally arrived at Lulú Ferris. They’re very popular in countries like the US, although their use is still not as widespread in Spain. Muslin cloths are wonderful for baby care because they’re very fine, lightweight, and soft fabrics made with natural fibers that don’t irritate a baby’s skin: cotton, bamboo, wool, silk… In this respect, they’re much more advisable than synthetic fibers.
They’re very versatile and also have other uses for adults. You can use them as a scarf, as a sarong, for draping, decorations, ruffles… But in honor of Laura, who is just about to have her third little one, today we’re more interested in focusing on uses for baby muslin cloths, so we’re going to tell you about the most common ones.
Baby muslin cloths: one fabric, a thousand uses
As we’ve already told you, muslin cloths are made with natural fibers. They’re very lightweight, almost transparent, which makes them very breathable. They’re also very soft, and their texture improves when they’re washed, becoming even softer and more delicate. This is great news because you’re going to have to wash them often: when it comes to babies, you know how it is.

The Egyptians already used them to wrap babies, and many midwives still do. That’s why this is one of their main uses: wrapping your little one so they feel safe, comfortable, and warm. It also helps them stay calm and regulate their body temperature, as well as preventing sudden reflexes while they sleep, making their sleep more peaceful.
Besides wrapping your baby in muslin, you can also use it as a sheet when it’s hot, both as a top sheet and a bottom sheet. In addition to covering your baby with it, it’s also very useful as a surface to lay them on when, for example, you want to change their diaper or place them on a surface you don’t entirely trust. You can also make a baby sleeping bag using muslin as the main material instead of regular cotton fabric, making it cooler and more summery.
They’re also an excellent sunshade: you can place one over the stroller or cover the baby directly with it. That said, when covering their head, you should always leave a generous opening so air can circulate and heat doesn’t build up inside.
Another wonderful way to use baby muslin cloths is as a bib: you can drape one over your shoulder while helping your baby burp, or over their clothes while they eat. Some moms also use them to cover themselves while breastfeeding and wipe away what the little one doesn’t swallow. Because of the delicacy of the fabric, you can use it to dry your baby without any problem.
At first, you may not know exactly what to do with muslin cloths or may not be entirely clear about what they’re for, but once you get used to using them and always having one close at hand, you won’t be able to live without them.
