Although we can still feel the sun and the warmth giving us a brief respite during the last days of summer, there’s very little time left before fall officially begins. And we’re always one step ahead, thinking about what’s to come, so we’ve already published a post or two to prepare for the new season: forecasting trends, imagining colors and thinking about everything we can do to welcome the new season.
In today’s post, we thought about what fall brings that could be useful for our DIY projects and, more specifically, looked for fall DIY projects for kids that you can make and enjoy with the little ones at home. Because they’re also the stars and budding little artists, bursting with creativity and energy to spend in better places than in front of the TV. Just as in summer we suggested 5 DIY games to keep them happy and entertained, today we’re suggesting easy and fun crafts you can make with them using the materials nature scatters everywhere when the cold weather begins.
FALL DIY PROJECTS FOR KIDS (and not-so-little kids).
1. Animal crowns and masks.
This project can really be made in any season, but we’ve included it in this selection of fall DIY projects for kids because it will be much easier to find leaves now, and they’ll also be much prettier in shades of orange, yellow, gold, red… It’s wonderfully easy, and you need very little to make it. Just leaves, brown paper (the typical wrapping kind), glue, scissors and some type of adhesive tape to reinforce the structure. 2. Dried-leaf garlands.
You already know how much we love garlands, and now… we’ve discovered leaf garlands! They’re also super easy to make, and you only need leaves and a little cord or thread. You can make them in lots of ways, using natural leaves or cutting them out of fabric or cardstock with the little ones. You can make them with all the leaves the same or alternate several different ones that look good together, write letters on them to personalize them or leave them natural… Whatever you like best! You can tie the cord to the stems or thread it through them with a needle, as in the example in the photo.
3. Fun photos.
Another fall DIY project for kids they’ll love. Collect all the materials you find: leaves, little sticks, tree bark, dried grasses… Then print a photo that would be good to decorate, in which you, your little one or whichever star you prefer appears full-length against a clean background. Now all you need is glue, scissors… and have fun! You don’t even have to glue the materials to the photograph. You can make several attempts and take photos of all of them until you find the one you like best, and then glue that one down for posterity.
4. Pinecone figures.
If you live in an area with pine trees, the ground will soon start filling with these small, lightweight pinecones that are often used in Christmas decorations. You’ll see that it’s very easy to use your imagination and turn them into little animals, like the birds in the photo. In this case, felt was used to make the wings and the plastic eyes were purchased, although you can also use other materials you have closer at hand, such as cardstock, buttons, etc… If you can’t glue the accessories to the pinecone because there isn’t enough surface area, try gluing them to a small piece of fabric or something similar, then put glue on the fabric as well and insert it between the gaps in the pinecone so it sticks securely.
5. Painted dried leaves.
Another very, very easy idea, for which you only need a little paint or markers. Choose leaves in different shapes and sizes and create different, eye-catching designs that you can then use, for example, to make a garland, a mobile, a collage, a crown or anything else you can think of. You can also write messages on the leaves to give to other family members, friends… A decorative and very original keepsake.
