1. Help other people do what you already know how to do
No one knows everything. I’m sure there are people who sew better than we do, but that isn’t what matters. What matters is that we have our own style, that we love what we do, and that sharing it makes us happy. And that should matter to you, too. Even if you’re just starting out, think about all the people who are starting out as well and who are experiencing the same fears and problems you are right now: seeing you overcome them will be a huge help to them as they do the same.
2. Motivate yourself to improve and learn more
One of the best things a blog can give you is the opportunity to learn a tremendous amount. You research online, look for the best way to do things, and learn techniques thoroughly so you can explain them… So, in addition to teaching other people, it turns out that you are also gaining a wealth of valuable knowledge and skills for your own growth. Exchanging information with other readers and people who are at the same stage of learning will also be an excellent way to improve.
3. Show the world what you make
We all know what it’s like to make something beautiful and feel proud of it, only to have no one around us who can appreciate it. A blog lets you connect with people who share your tastes and interests and can be the perfect showcase for your work. When we see something we like, we want to know what fabric it’s made with, whether or not you followed a pattern, how difficult it was… So, in addition to showing your work, you should explain the making process, what inspired you, and which part was the most difficult. These are things that interest you, too, and your readers are sure to be interested in them as well.
There are no perfect formulas: it’s about sharing, being yourself, and telling the story of your adventures and misadventures, joys and frustrations, and everything that happens along your journey in your sewing blog, as naturally as possible. That’s the only secret.
