What you’ll make

The Zola is a children’s knit sweatshirt with a lined paneled hood, divided front and back sections, rib-knit cuffs, and an optional flap pocket in the center front seam.

The pattern offers a standard length and a shorter cropped version. Optional eyelets and a drawstring can be added at the hood, hem, or both.

Color blocking emphasizes the panel lines, but the sweatshirt can also be made in one fabric.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Cut mirrored hood pieces and identify both length lines.
  • Sew a flap pocket into the divided front.
  • Use suitable needles and flexible finishes for knit fabric.
  • Set the sleeves and align intersecting panel seams.
  • Stretch rib-knit cuffs evenly to fit the sleeves.
  • Construct, line, and attach a paneled hood.
  • Add eyelets and a drawstring channel at the hood or hem.

Fabric and materials

Choose French terry, brushed sweatshirt knit, or a knit with a soft inner pile. Use rib knit for the cuffs.

A stretch, jersey, or ballpoint needle is recommended. A walking foot can help feed the fabric, while a serger or zigzag finish preserves stretch in the seams.

Make it your own

Mix several colors, combine two fabrics, or use one print. You can omit the pocket or simplify the paneled front by cutting it in one fabric.

Choose the standard or cropped length, shorten the sleeves, or extend the body into a sweatshirt dress. Add a drawstring only where it suits the wearer.

Pair it with the Ben joggers or kids’ palazzo pants.

Sizing

The pattern covers ages 5/6, 6/7, 7/8, 8/9, 9/10, 10/11, 11/12, and 12/13.

The video class includes the downloadable multi-size Zola sweatshirt pattern.
