What you’ll make
Sew a fully lined tote with a top zipper, webbing shoulder straps and a boxed base. The closed top keeps the contents less exposed than an open tote.
The featured version combines two exterior fabrics and includes a large patch pocket with decorative studs. Make the same design in one fabric without the optional details for a cleaner result.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Join two exterior fabrics and align their seams across the bag.
- Prepare and topstitch an optional exterior patch pocket.
- Add fabric zipper stops and install the zipper between exterior and lining.
- Attach webbing handles with secure reinforced stitching.
- Assemble the exterior and lining with a turning opening.
- Sew boxed corners to create the bag’s 6 cm depth.
Fabric and materials
Structured exterior options include denim, canvas, corduroy or tapestry fabric. Lighter poplin can also work with interfacing when you want more body.
Use quilting cotton or poplin for the lining. You will also need a zipper and webbing for the handles; decorative studs are optional.
Make it your own
Use one exterior fabric or combine two, resize or omit the patch pocket, and leave off the studs. Before cutting the webbing, test the handle length with a measuring tape and adjust it for your preferred carry.
If you prefer an open-top style, see the Amsterdam lined pocket tote bag.
