Zippered Swaddle Sack

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to sew a zippered swaddle sack that helps your baby feel more secure and is said to help them sleep better and feel more relaxed.

Zippered Swaddle Sack

What you’ll make

Sew a close-fitting swaddle sack in stretch knit, with the baby’s arms enclosed rather than passing through side openings.

A long front zipper provides access. A full-length inner guard separates it from the baby’s skin, while a hook-and-loop flap covers the slider at the neckline.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Identify the front, back and smaller pattern pieces.
  • Cut mirrored fronts and a fold-cut back.
  • Stabilize the front edges for the zipper.
  • Add a finished lower zipper stop.
  • Insert the zipper and inner guard in knit fabric.
  • Make the protective hook-and-loop flap.

Fabric and supplies

The sample uses soft knit fabric with some stretch. You’ll also need a long zipper, interfacing, hook-and-loop tape and the smaller fabric pieces included in the pattern.

The sample has visible serged seams. You may place them inside instead, or use straight and zigzag stitching on a regular sewing machine if you do not have a serger.

Make it your own

You can adapt the project into a regular sleep sack with arm openings. Use the placement from the baby sleep sack pattern, then finish the openings to match the other edges.

Sizing

The pattern covers sizes from 0–3 months through 9–12 months. The front and back necklines have different shapes, and the class explains how to identify them before cutting.

The video covers the stretch construction and protective zipper details, accompanied by a downloadable multi-size pattern.
