What you’ll make

Sew a fitted cover that helps shield a washing machine from rain and cleaning-product spills when the appliance is kept in an exposed area.

Two vertical zippers release the front panel, allowing access to the drum and detergent area without removing the entire cover.

A short rear panel and ties secure the cover behind the machine while leaving the back open around pipes and fittings.

What you’ll learn in this class

Cut the rectangular cover pieces from the supplied measurements.
Install and topstitch the vertical zippers in the front panel.
Guide sticky coated fabric with a Teflon foot, paper, or tape.
Join the front, sides, and top while forming clean corners.
Finish the back opening and lower edge with simple hems.
Position and reinforce the rear ties.

Fabric and notions

The sample uses waterproof translucent TPU sheeting that can be wiped clean. The instructor also suggests coated fabric or canvas treated with a fabric-waterproofing product.

You’ll need zippers and narrow tape for the back ties. Overcast any fabric that may fray before assembling the cover.

Make it your own

Use full-length zippers or adapt shorter ones as demonstrated.
Move the rear ties higher or lower to avoid pipes and fittings.
Choose a printed waterproof material or waterproof a suitable canvas.

Finished measurements

The finished cover measures approximately 78 cm high × 62 cm wide × 58 cm deep.

It was designed around a standard machine measuring approximately 80 cm high × 60 cm wide × 55 cm deep. Compare the measurements with your appliance before cutting.
