What you’ll make
The Osaka is a loose unisex shirt adapted from the Unisex Robe pattern. It has cut-on, Japanese-style sleeves, a collar, front facings and a softly shaped hem.
The demonstrated version is cropped, with the back slightly longer than the front. Wear it closed as a shirt or open over a T-shirt or top.
Pair it with the Jaén Pants or Bombai Pants.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Select the base size by chest measurement and desired ease.
- Trace the robe front and back at shirt length.
- Extend the shoulder into a cut-on sleeve.
- Redraw and coordinate the front and back hems.
- Test the altered pattern with a partial muslin.
- Assemble the collar, facings, curved hem and closure.
Fabric and stabilization
Use a woven fabric with movement and drape. The sample is made in lightweight viscose for a fluid shirt that also works as an open layer.
The class shows how lightweight fusible support can stabilize the collar, facings, neckline and curved areas. It also covers reinforcing the buttonhole side of a fine fabric.
Make it your own
Choose the shirt and sleeve lengths on the traced pattern. Make the sleeve narrower or wider, and finish the hem straight or curved, with the back level or slightly longer.
Select the base size for a regular fit or add ease for an oversized result. A test version helps confirm the sleeve depth and finished length before cutting the final fabric.
Retain or omit the original chest pocket. Finish the front with buttons, a single fastening, snaps or no closure for an open overshirt.
Pattern sizing
The base pattern covers sizes 34/36 through 54/56, with chest measurements from 82 to 130 cm. The class uses the chest as the main guide for selecting a size.
The class combines pattern alteration and garment construction, with downloadable Unisex Robe pattern files in A0 and A4 formats.
