What you’ll make
Sew a padded, lined case for a ukulele or guitar. Each version has a long zipper for access, a zippered front pocket, and an adjustable carrying strap.
The pocket holds small accessories such as picks or a notebook. The shaped body, padding, lining, and zippered side panel make this an intermediate project.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut mirrored outer, lining, and padded pieces.
- Attach batting and finish fraying fabrics.
- Construct and position a zippered front pocket.
- Install the long zipper between side panels.
- Reinforce the handle and strap attachments.
- Match notches around the shaped case body.
- Turn the case and close the lining opening.
Fabric and materials
Use a sturdy fabric such as canvas outside. The lining can be matching canvas, poplin, quilting cotton, or another suitable cotton woven.
The case is padded with batting. The demonstrated case has batting on the outer pieces, while another sample also pads the lining pieces for a thicker result.
Waterproof canvas is another option. A favorite woven fabric can also be treated with Odicoat for a more wipeable surface.
Make it your own
The pattern provides separate guitar and ukulele shapes based on the instruments used in class. Compare the pattern with your instrument and alter the height or length if needed.
Position the adjustable shoulder strap to suit you. For the guitar version, the class also suggests two padded straps and two lower attachment points for backpack-style carrying.
The video class includes printable guitar and ukulele patterns and demonstrates the pocket, padding, long zipper, lining, shaped assembly, and carrying straps.
