What you’ll make
Sew a full-length, unlined trench coat with the defining details of this classic style and a lightweight finish.
- Front welt pockets
- A cape-style back storm flap
- Wide cuffs with optional buttoned tabs
- A matching belt and belt loops
- A center-back vent for easier movement
The pattern creates a long coat, while the shorter red version offers inspiration for adjusting the length.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Build wide cuffs, cuff tabs, belt loops and a matching belt.
- Form and secure the center-back vent.
- Attach the back storm flap while controlling its ease.
- Sew welt pockets and finish the pocket bags.
- Match and insert the sleeves using the pattern notches.
- Construct the collar, lapels and front facings.
- Reinforce and sew buttonholes for your chosen closure.
This longer, multi-stage project is best suited to sewists ready to move beyond beginner techniques.
Fabric choices
The featured long coat is made in faux suede for a soft, refined surface. Gabardine is another supported choice, including a lighter gabardine-like fabric with a suiting texture.
Test pressing on a scrap first. Some fabrics may need a pressing cloth, and fabric thickness can affect the best finishing method.
Make it your own
- Shorten the long pattern to create a shorter coat.
- Leave the wide cuffs plain and fold them back, or add loops, tabs and buttons.
- Vary the number of front buttons or omit them.
- Add buttonholes to one front edge or both edges.
- Add an optional belt loop at the center back.
Pattern sizing
The pattern covers grouped sizes 34/36, 38/40, 42/44, 46/48, 50/52 and 54/56.
The body chart spans a bust of 86–132 cm, waist of 64–110 cm and hips of 90–136 cm. The finished coat length ranges from 128 cm to 138 cm by size.
