What you’ll make

Sew a lined pouch sized for a child’s toothbrush and a small tube of toothpaste. Its flap closes with hook-and-loop tape, and a hanging loop makes it practical for school or travel.

Toothbrush and toothpaste appliqués decorate the front. A label on the flap provides a place for the child’s name, while the boxed base adds depth for the contents.

What you’ll learn in this class

Trace, fuse, and zigzag layered fabric appliqués.
Fuse interfacing to support the pouch and flap.
Align the closure with the flap and pouch front.
Create matching boxed corners in the exterior and lining.
Insert the flap and hanging loop into the upper edge.
Turn the pouch through the lining and close the opening.

Fabric and finish options

Use exterior fabric, lining, interfacing, and small scraps for the appliqués. Double-sided fusible web holds the appliqué pieces before stitching.

The lining can be treated with the demonstrated fabric coating before cutting for a more water-resistant interior.

Make it your own

Use hook-and-loop tape for an easy closure or substitute a snap. Make the hanging loop from bias tape, cord, lace trim, or a strip of matching fabric.

Add the name with a permanent fabric marker or stitch it directly onto the fabric. Rearrange the appliqués or add a stitched divider inside the pouch.

Verified measurements

The base pieces are 10 cm wide by 22.5 cm long, and the flap pieces are 8.5 cm square. The pouch fits child-size dental supplies; add about 5 cm to the length for an adult version.
