What you’ll make
The Terra Backpack is a lined everyday bag with a zipped main compartment, a dimensional front zip pocket and a concealed bound-zip pocket at the back.
A shaped triangular base gives the backpack depth. Adjustable webbing straps, a hanging loop and a decorative strap with a swivel clasp complete the design.
The interior is left open in the sample, giving you space to add pockets or a divider if desired.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Construct a lined, dimensional front zip pocket.
- Sew a concealed bound-zip pocket in the back.
- Install and topstitch the main zipper.
- Match notches and sew shaped curves.
- Form the base in the outer bag and lining.
- Attach webbing, adjusters, a hanging loop and a clasp.
- Choose interfacing for the structure you want.
Fabric and structure
The sample uses canvas for the exterior and poplin for the lining. The front pocket can be made in a different exterior fabric.
Thick interfacing gives the sample its structure. Thinner interfacing or batting can create a softer finish.
Make it your own
The class identifies several details that can be changed or omitted to create a different version.
- Replace the webbing with padded fabric straps.
- Add interior pockets or a tablet divider.
- Add a flap over the top zipper.
- Omit the front pocket.
- Skip the shaped base for a flatter bag.
- Change, adjust or remove the clasp strap.
Finished size
The approximate finished measurements are 30 cm high, 28 cm wide and 6 cm deep.
The video class is accompanied by Terra pattern files in A4 and A0 formats and a pattern information sheet.
