What you’ll make

The Tenerife is a classic belt bag with a roomy zippered main compartment and an adjustable webbing strap.

A zippered back pocket keeps selected belongings close to the body. Inside, an elastic loop and clip provide a dedicated place for keys.

The optional asymmetrical front pocket offers quick access to sunglasses, a phone or other small items while giving the curved bag a distinctive look.

What you’ll learn in this class

Build the curved main zipper section.
Align its exterior and lining pieces.
Add a separate zippered back pocket.
Integrate the optional asymmetrical front pocket.
Install an elastic loop and clip for keys.
Join and turn the lined sections cleanly.
Finish an adjustable webbing strap with a slider and buckle.

Fabric and sewing considerations

The demonstrated combination uses canvas for the exterior and poplin for the lining. Optional interfacing can add body.

Overcast pieces if the fabric frays, but consider the extra thickness at layered junctions. The class identifies areas where bulky seams may challenge a domestic machine.

A walking or roller foot can help over thick areas. The instructor also explains how to adapt the needle choice as the number of layers increases.

Make it your own

Omit the asymmetrical pocket for a simpler exterior, or mirror its pattern piece to suit the direction in which you wear the bag across your body.

Choose the opening direction of each zipper. Finish the front pocket edge with topstitching, zigzag stitching, decorative stitching or binding.
