Surgical Cap and Stethoscope Cover

Because we know lots of nurses, because you’ve asked us for it, and because we love Grey’s Anatomy… today we’re sewing a surgical cap and a stethoscope cover. That’s right: a cap for nurses, surgeons, doctors… These caps tend to be rather plain, so now there’s no excuse—we got to work so you can sew one at home…

What you’ll make

Sew a coordinated surgical cap and fabric stethoscope cover in a print of your choice. The cap uses elastic at the back and fabric ties for an adjustable fit.

The gathered cover slips over the stethoscope tubing, with elastic at the lower end and a snap at the top so it can be put on and removed.

What you’ll learn in these classes

  • Cut the cap on the fold and align directional prints.
  • Join the curved crown using the pattern notches.
  • Create the elasticized back and fabric ties.
  • Finish curved cotton edges without a serger.
  • Interface and attach the cover facings.
  • Sew and turn the cover and add its snap and elastic.

Fabric and sewing choices

The sample uses 100% cotton. When using a directional print, follow the pattern arrows while cutting the cap pieces.

Raw edges can be finished with a serger, zigzag, or overcasting stitch. Make the ties from matching fabric or use suitable ready-made bias tape.

Make it your own

The cap pattern has two sizes: a smaller option and a roomier version for more hair. You can also alter the depth so the cap sits higher or lower.

Before cutting the stethoscope cover, compare the PDF measurements with the specific instrument and adjust the length or fit if needed.

Fit and sizing

Choose between the two cap sizes using the wearer’s head measurement and hair volume. Verify the stethoscope-cover measurements against the instrument.

Two video classes cover the matching set, accompanied by a PDF containing the cap pattern and stethoscope-cover pieces.
