What you’ll make
Sew lightweight summer overalls for babies and young children, with either short or long legs.
Finish the shoulders with ties for an adjustable knotted look, or use reinforced straps with snaps or buttons.
The sleeveless shape has open armholes and can be finished with outward-turned summer cuffs or conventional hems.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Cut the long or short version and extend the pattern for integrated shoulder ties.
- Stabilize the curved armholes and neckline with fusible stay tape.
- Finish narrow curved edges cleanly on woven fabric.
- Reinforce shoulder facings for snaps or button-and-buttonhole closures.
- Join and finish the side seams and inseam without stretching the curves.
- Create turned cuffs or substitute a standard stitched hem.
Fabric and materials
The taught version uses lightweight woven fabric such as linen-like cloth, yarn-dyed fabric or a thin patchwork-style cotton.
Fusible stay tape supports the open armholes and neckline so they do not stretch out during construction or wear.
The instructor also permits knit fabric if you switch to a ballpoint or stretch needle and use zigzag, stretch seams or an overlocker as appropriate.
Make it your own
Choose long or short legs, shoulder ties, snaps or conventional buttons. The women’s overalls class demonstrates adjustable buttoned straps.
For a buttonhole without an automatic function, see the drawstring bucket bag class.
For crotch snaps that simplify diaper changes, compare the baby overalls romper.

Sizing
The pattern ranges from 0–3 months through 3–4 years. If you are between sizes or uncertain, the original class recommends choosing the larger size.
The class comes with the downloadable LF19 pattern, including long and short versions plus tie or snap shoulders.
