What you’ll make

Make a soft, star-shaped baby teether with varied fabric textures, small loops and a wooden teething ring. A snap-fastened tab lets you remove the ring before washing the sewn portion or replace it when worn.

The demonstrated version combines printed knit, soft fleece and optional translucent plastic that adds a crinkling sound. It is an approachable project for practicing shaped seams.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Layer knit or woven fabric with fleece and optional plastic.
  • Position bias-tape loops inside the seam.
  • Sew slowly around the star and pivot at its points.
  • Trim the points and turn the shape neatly.
  • Close the opening by machine or with the invisible stitch tutorial.
  • Install snaps for the removable wooden ring.

Materials and textures

The class uses knit fabric on one side and fleece on the other, although woven fabric can replace the knit. Optional translucent plastic adds sound between the layers.

Bias tape or decorative ribbons form the tactile loops. You will also need snaps and a wooden ring intended for a baby teether.

Make it your own

Group the loops on one star point as demonstrated or distribute them around the shape. The plastic layer and decorative label are optional.

You can draft another simple shape, provided it includes the elongated tab needed to wrap around the wooden ring.

The video class includes a downloadable star pattern and material guide.
