What you’ll make
Sew a fabric basket that collapses for storage and pops open around a flexible spring. Exterior pockets keep smaller items visible and within reach.
The basket can organize sewing tools, clothing accessories, toys or laundry, depending on the spring size. A loop or elastic strap can make it easier to hang, store or carry.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Apply interfacing to the body, pocket and base.
- Hem or bind the exterior pocket.
- Divide the pocket into custom compartments.
- Match quarter points to attach circular bases.
- Position the spring between the fabric layers.
- Control the spring before cutting its black restraint.
- Bind the upper edge neatly.
Fabric and structure
The demonstrated basket uses exterior and inner fabrics, fusible interfacing and a spring insert. The optional pocket has its own interfacing for support.
Bias tape can finish the pocket and upper edge, although the pocket may be hemmed instead. Add a fabric or tape loop before closing the side seam.
Make it your own
Leave off the pocket for a streamlined laundry or toy basket, or divide it into narrow and wide sections for sewing notions, socks, belts and other small items.
Add an elastic strap to hold the basket compressed for travel, a loop for hanging or decorative stitching along the pocket and binding.
