Short-Sleeve Full-Coverage Bib

Video class

What you’ll make

Sew a short-sleeve, full-coverage bib for a child who is sitting up for meals. The terry body covers the torso and shoulders, while long bias-tape ends tie at the back.

The class presents two versions: one with a front pocket for crumbs and small items, and one without a pocket but decorated with fabric appliqués.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Place the pattern on folded terry cloth and cut the symmetrical bib body.
  • Prepare a front pocket with a bound or hemmed upper edge.
  • Stitch the pocket in place before binding the outer edge.
  • Apply bias tape around the armholes, neckline, sleeves, and body.
  • Make fabric appliqués with fusible web and secure them with zigzag stitching.
  • Use a walking foot when bulky terry layers do not feed evenly.

Fabric and finishing

The demonstrated bib uses terry cloth for the body, coordinating fabric for the pocket or appliqués, and bias tape around the edges.

The appliqué fusible web is not a permanent finish by itself. After fusing, stitch around each shape to secure its edges.

Make it your own

Choose the pocket, appliqués, or both. The included star is one option, but the same method works with other simple traced shapes.

Contrast the bias tape and pocket fabric, leave the bib plain, or hem the pocket’s upper edge instead of binding it.

The video class includes a downloadable bib pattern with a star appliqué template.
