Sewing Machine Bag and Mat
In this class, we’ll sew a practical sewing machine bag that also doubles as a mat. Its 4 zippers allow it to open out completely, creating four wings, each with pockets for storing sewing accessories. Pattern included!

What you’ll make
Sew a padded sewing machine carrier that opens completely into a work mat. Four side zippers release the panels, keeping supplies accessible around the machine.
The closed bag has a handle and a top flap secured with hook-and-loop tape. Opened flat, its four wings provide organized storage beside and behind the machine.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Prepare padded exterior and stabilized lining panels.
- Bind mesh pockets and add elastic.
- Sew a divided organizer with covered sections.
- Install an inset zipper pocket.
- Assemble the outer shell and lining.
- Install the four side zippers.
- Add the flap, handle, closures, and zipper stops.
Fabric options
Canvas is recommended for the exterior, with poplin or canvas for the lining. Batting pads the carrier, while mesh keeps the side-pocket contents visible.
Make it your own
Divide the rear organizer to fit your tools, with narrow sections for markers or wider sections for rulers and scissors. Add covered sections where useful.
The front zip pocket can be repositioned, enlarged, or repeated. The class also shows how to replace metal zipper stops with fabric stops.
Add the removable hook-and-loop pincushion from the Sewing Machine Mat, or make that simpler project if you do not need a carrier.
Fit it to your machine
The project can be adapted to suit your sewing machine. Recalculate the fabric requirements if you change its dimensions.
The class includes A4 and A0 patterns, a measurements-only PDF for the rectangular pieces, and a separate information sheet.
