What you’ll make
Sew a lined bag that mounts on the handlebars of a child’s scooter or bike, then converts into a crossbody bag when it is time to continue on foot.
The adjustable shoulder strap hides inside a back pocket while the bag is mounted. Two elasticized mesh side pockets hold small items such as water bottles, toys, or games.
The padded body has a flap closure and a softly structured shape. The handlebar fastenings can be configured differently for a scooter or bike.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Layer exterior fabric, lining, and batting for structure.
- Sew and turn a lined flap with rounded or square corners.
- Shape mesh pockets and bind their elasticized openings.
- Assemble the exterior and lining while aligning the layers.
- Add an adjustable crossbody strap and handlebar loops.
- Install snaps or use hook-and-loop tape for the closures.
Fabric and supplies
The project uses exterior fabric, lining, batting, interfacing, mesh, binding, elastic, and backpack webbing. A buckle, sliders, and either snaps or hook-and-loop tape complete the bag.
Make it your own
For the scooter version, one handlebar loop is fixed and the other opens. For a bike, both loops can open so the bag can fit around brakes and other handlebar components.
Choose rounded flap corners for a softer shape or leave them square. You can also coordinate or contrast the mesh, binding, webbing, and hardware with the main fabric.
Verified measurements
The main body pieces measure 23 cm wide by 29 cm high. The flap is 21 cm square, and the side panels measure 10 cm wide by 24 cm high before sewing.
The video class is accompanied by a PDF with the measured pieces, materials list, and separate strap guidance for scooter and bike versions.
