What you’ll make
Sew an extra-large beach or pool bag with a mesh base that lets loose sand fall out. A gathered mesh pocket inside keeps smaller belongings separate.
Exterior elastic bands can hold a rolled towel, sarong, yoga mat, or pool noodle. Thick rope handles give the bag a nautical finish.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Finish raw edges when the main fabric frays.
- Bind mesh neatly with bias tape.
- Gather the interior pocket with elastic.
- Attach the pocket and add optional divisions.
- Secure covered elastic bands to the exterior.
- Join the mesh base and form the rope casing.
Fabric and construction notes
The sample uses waterproof fabric that does not fray. Canvas is another option, but its raw edges should be finished with a zigzag, overcasting stitch, or serger.
Mesh forms the sand-releasing base and interior pocket. Bias tape, elastic, and thick cord complete the functional details.
Make it your own
Add stitched divisions if you prefer smaller interior pockets. Choose matching or contrasting thread for the visible pocket seams.
Cover plain elastic with coordinating fabric or use colored elastic without a casing. Adapt the exterior bands to the items you want to carry.
