In today’s tutorial, we’ll show you how to sew period underwear, which materials to use, and how to make two pattern styles in sizes 34 to 50. You’re going to love them!

What you’ll make
Sew reusable period underwear with a layered central panel. A stay-dry layer moves moisture toward an absorbent core, while PUL helps keep it from passing through to the outer fabric.
The pattern offers a smaller Brazilian-style cut and a fuller-coverage version with lower leg openings and a higher waist. Either style can also be sewn as everyday underwear.
What you’ll learn in this class
- Combine stay-dry, absorbent, and PUL layers in the central panel.
- Handle PUL with clips to avoid unnecessary pinholes.
- Join stretch-knit seams with a flexible finish.
- Attach the panel and finish its curves with a twin needle.
- Apply waist elastic evenly without distorting the knit.
- Add and finish elastic lace at the leg openings.
Fabric and absorbent layers
The demonstrated underwear uses stretch cotton knit, dryliner next to the body, absorbent cotton-bamboo-hemp fabric, and breathable waterproof PUL as the barrier.
Bamboo terry is another absorbent option discussed in class. Test the number of layers according to personal flow, comfort, and intended use.
Use a needle suited to the exact fabric, such as a knit or Microtex needle. A serger is optional because straight stitching with a zigzag or overlock-style finish is also demonstrated.
Make it your own
Choose elastic lace or turned knit edges at the legs. At the waist, use wide elastic, elastic lace, or another soft elastic finish suited to the fabric.
Make either silhouette with the absorbent panel, or omit the specialized layers to sew everyday underwear from the same pattern.
