What you’ll make

Turn a two-fabric panel into a dimensional origami-style boat for nautical decor. The class version starts with a panel sized like an A4 sheet.

Contrasting fabrics appear on different parts of the folded shape. Add an optional cord or ribbon so the boat can hang as a decorative accent.

What you’ll learn in this class

Prepare a two-fabric panel with optional lace trim.
Sew clean corners and reduce bulk before turning.
Press accurate folds to control the layers.
Stitch the diagonal sections that structure the boat.
Trim excess fabric without cutting the seams.
Turn and shape the final folds neatly.

Fabric and notions

The demonstrated boat uses two coordinating fabrics. Add lace to the visible face and cord, ribbon, or another narrow trim if you want a hanging loop.

Pressing is central to forming the origami-inspired shape. A walking foot can help when sewing through the thicker folded layers.

Make it your own

Change the fabric pairing, omit the trim, or choose a different hanging cord. You can also make the boat larger or smaller than the A4 example.

For a very small boat, use a single fabric to reduce bulk. Enlarge the design to create a decorative pillow.
