What you’ll make

Sew an elongated case for pencils, makeup or toiletries. A separating zipper follows the curved top and lets the case open fully, providing a clear view of the contents.

A divided interior slip pocket organizes smaller items. At the open end, a structured fabric stop helps keep contents from sliding out when the zipper is completely open.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Make a lining pocket with custom divisions.
  • Set a separating zipper smoothly around a curve.
  • Join the shaped exterior and lining accurately.
  • Form the zipper ends and raised fabric stop.
  • Manage bulky intersections around the zipper.
  • Turn, close and topstitch the finished case.

Fabric and support

The class sample uses lightweight cotton fabrics, including poplin, with fine interfacing for body. Canvas is another supported exterior option and may need little or no added support.

Firmer interfacing or batting creates a more structured case. The class discusses reducing bulk with thicker support layers and finishing fabrics that fray easily.

Make it your own

  • Change the number and spacing of the pocket divisions.
  • Replace the divided pocket with elastic loops.
  • Make the grab loop from bias tape, ribbon or cord.
  • Omit the loop or add a small swivel hook.
  • Finish the pocket edge with binding or decorative stitching.

Finished size

Closed, the case is approximately 21 cm wide × 11 cm high × 5 cm deep. Open, it remains 21 cm wide and 11 cm high, with a depth of about 10 cm.

The video class includes a printable A4 pattern with the pieces, finished dimensions and material requirements for the Norma case.
