Phone or Tablet Stand

Most of you watch the tutorials on your phone or tablet, so we decided to make a stand for them. This sturdy stand folds in on itself and fastens with practical Velcro. It takes up about as much space as a small notebook, so you can easily bring it to work or take it with you when traveling by train or plane.

What you’ll make

Make a padded stand that supports a phone or tablet at your preferred viewing angle. It folds flat, fastens with hook-and-loop tape, and packs down to about the size of a small notebook.

A pocket on the back can hold a charging cable, portable charger, paper, or a pen.

What you’ll learn in this class

  • Plan the pocket, closures, and rigid panels.
  • Sew and position the back pocket.
  • Attach hook-and-loop tape cleanly.
  • Layer the fabrics with batting and turn the cover.
  • Insert the rigid panels and stitch between them.
  • Close the final edge with the fastening strip.

Fabric and structure

The sample combines twill for the body with rustic cotton for the pocket. Choose a fabric with some body and avoid highly stretchy knits.

Batting softens the cover. Rigid inserts provide structure; the class suggests foam board or sturdy recycled cardboard that can be cut to size.

Make it your own

Use matching or contrasting fabrics and add the optional decorative cotton tape. The pocket can also be made from fine cotton, mesh, or sewable clear material.

Add two or three soft hook-and-loop strips to create one or several viewing angles. Their placement determines how upright the device sits.
